Google Balloons – pop goes the Internet…

16 Jun

Top secret Google Balloon connection plan – Project Loon – is being trialled in New Zealand in order to connect to those who cannot receive standard Internet connection. Google also hopes this technology can be used to reach approximately 4.7 billion people who cannot access the Internet now – but that is not necessarily realistic as many under-developed communities don’t know what a computer is and have no knowledge at all of the Internet.

Connecting to a culture that doesn’t understand a global world may also create issues within that local culture that may not improve life – in fact, it may do the opposite.

Whilst connecting the world seems like a grand plan, it hardly seems a priority where communities struggle to get fresh food or clean water, and any communication they make may be monitored and controlled by unruly authoritarian regimes.
